Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Bethany is a normal girl. But, when she finds out that her parents have been hiding a secret from her, she decides to go and find out ON HER OWN what the secret is. This book made me want to keep reading and reading until I was staying up too late and not getting enough sleep.

The Old Willis Place by Mary Downing Hahn-reveiwed by dp

The Old Willis Place is a very good book. It is about Goergie and Diana, and their problem is that they have to live by strict rules. Diana wants to be friends with Lissa, the daughter of the new caretaker at the farm where they live. There is a big surprise in this book that will haunt you as you try to sleep at night.

Robin who has been a pathetic loser for about 15 years finally meets the girl of his dreams who finally falls in love with him who is Sophie. People think it is bad thing because Sophie who knows a lot of people and Robin who is like invisible to everybody else think they make a bad couple. Everybody, in the school looks at them all weird but they walk down not paying any mind to it. Sophie says that there is no chance that they are going to break us up. It seems like falling in love would be good but it is complicated. Robin’s girlfriend Sophie is like amazing and special to him, but the way their relationship is going so far, that things come to worse when you don't get what you want.

The Dead and the Gone-Susan Beth Pfeffer

Susan Beth Pfeffer’s book Life as We Knew It was one of my favorites last year. I have been counting down the days, waiting for this companion, The Dead and the Gone, to be published. This book takes place at the same time as LWKI’s devastating natural occurence, an asteroid slamming into and altering the moon’s orbit. This time the story focuses on a Puerto Rican family in New York City. Alex’s dad is in Puerto Rico and his mom is at work at a hospital when disaster strikes. I thought that Pfeffer’s portayal of what might occur in a big city was realistic. Rats would thrive on the bodies left on the streets. Citizens would resort to stealing items off those bodies in order to trade for food. Schools would do all they could to stay open and feed children lunches. I thought the book ended too early (spoiler alert). I was left wondering exactly what happened to Alex’s mother and father. What became of Alex and his sister when they did finally escape from New York. As we know from LWKI-things were tough all over. I was hoping they would stay, at least until Alex finally realized that he should gather supplies from all the deserted apartments in his building, not just the 2 he had keys to.

Little Brother-Cory Doctorow

I picked Little Brother up at the bookstore on a whim. It wasn’t until I was finished reading it and searched for more information online that I learned it has been reviewed and recommended all over the place. Marcus is at the wrong place when San Francisco’s Bay Bridge is attacked by terrorists. He spends the next week at ‘Gitmo by the Bay,’ and the next few months after that using technology, namely security, to fight against the Department of Homeland Security. I made it through the technological descriptions with little trouble-thanks to the metaphors. How close are we to this world? How closely can the government track us? After reading this book I was tempted to get rid of my I-pass and began to notice cameras everywhere. The mature relationship that develops between Marcus and his girl Ange is just lovely-but a little mature for readers below 7th grade.
